The Employment Development Department’s (EDD) Student Assistant (SA)/Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) Program offers a unique opportunity for students who wish to gain on-the-job experience in a government setting.

Students perform administrative, technical, and research duties that allows them to gain practical experience and learn about program policies and procedures. Duties will fall under either of two categories:

General - Assignments may include general administrative or technical duties that may or may not be directly related to a student’s academic education.

Research - Assignments may be directly related to the student’s field of study and career goals. Typical duties include research and analysis of EDD programs and policies.

The EDD offers positions throughout the State in a variety of fields including accounting, administration, marketing, information technology, human resources, and more.

Salaries and Benefits

Student wages and pay increases are based on the number of college units completed and time worked. Students have flexible work schedules and earn paid holidays, vacation and sick leave (upon qualifying time worked), gain valuable public service experience, and much more.

Who Can Apply

Students who are currently enrolled in a minimum of six semester or eight quarter units in an accredited college or university. Proof of enrollment must be provided prior to employment.

How to Apply

To apply for a SA/GSA position with EDD, complete and submit an Examination and/or Employment Application (STD 678). The STD 678 can be completed online, or downloaded from the State Personnel Board (SPB) Web site. Applications can also be obtained at any EDD Field Office, EDD Headquarters in Sacramento or the SPB.

The EDD will place your name in an applicant pool for at least six months. When positions become available, applications will be forwarded to hiring managers for consideration.
