National Small Business Week - Message from the EDD Director
National Small Business Week
Small Business Success Stories

Quietly and without fanfare, in good times and bad, small businesses carry the economy of California on their broad shoulders. More than one million small businesses employ nearly four of every five private sector workers in the Golden State. They not only produce the goods and services we all use in our daily lives - many of them work at the cutting edge in developing the new and innovative businesses that are a hallmark of the California dream.
The Employment Development Department (EDD) is proud to partner with small businesses including new companies that need help getting off the ground, and established businesses that are preparing to move to the next level. Our Workforce Services helps them find the workers they need to succeed. Our Tax seminars and publications provide valuable information on business laws and taxes. Our Work Sharing program offers alternatives to layoffs by providing prorated percentage payments of Unemployment Insurance benefits to workers whose hours and wages are reduced. Our Disability Insurance Elective Coverage program provides benefits to business owners and self employed individuals suffering from a loss of income due to illness, injury, or pregnancy. Our Labor Market Information offers a wide array of economic data to help small businesses make the right decisions as they grow and prosper.
In celebrating and encouraging the success of small businesses, we shape a brighter future for all Californians. We ask that you join us in saluting this vital sector of our economy during National Small Business Week beginning May 17, 2009. In celebration, EDD is shining the spotlight on a few of the Golden State’s most successful small business owners. We thank all of them for sharing their stories and for providing the inspiration for all us as we look towards a brighter California.
